Both within and beyond the walls of North Carolina’s nonprofit YMCAs, we are strengthening communities. From vitally important social connections as communities recover from COVID-19’s impact to job training and workforce development, from health interventions like preventing diabetes to providing a safe place for children to be after school, NC YMCAs meet the needs of their communities every day. Take a look at the impact of NC YMCAs in 2022.
- In 2022, nearly a quarter million children and teens benefitted from strong role models and had a safe place to play, learn, grow and thrive through afterschool programs, camps, youth sports and tutoring and mentoring programs.
- NC YMCAs grew their collaborations with NC Medicaid insurers to help improve health outcomes through the Y’s evidence-based health programs, such as the Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program, Healthy Weight and Your Child and Blood Pressure Self-monitoring. The Y is a committed community health partner.
- NC YMCAs provided more than one million meals to children, families and seniors and more than 1.7 million pounds of food donated by members, partners and others. Food insecurity continues to be a serious challenge in our state, with more than one million people facing hunger, including one in six children. Eighteen of our 25 North Carolina YMCA associations participated in federal feeding programs in 2022, and more Ys are launching this work because food insecurity is such a significant need and access to food is an important social determinant of health.
- Because the Y is for all, NC Ys provided $23.3 million in financial scholarship for membership and programs so that all could participate in swim lessons, afterschool, sports and more.
The Y is the leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose and each other. Working locally, we focus on empowering young people, improving health and well-being, and inspiring action in and across communities.
We’re grateful to the staff who are so committed to the Y’s mission and to the members, volunteers and donors who help make our work possible. Contact your local Y to learn more about how they are serving their community.
